Magdala: Ancient Synagogue from Jesus’ Time

Port/ Fisherman’s Work Area

Walking towards the Sea of Galilee, you will see fisherman’s work area and port. Hooks and fishing weights were found here.

The arrangement here suggests this place used to be a port.  This area is not open to public yet! The signboard says there’s a mosaic floor here with a fishing boat on it. This would suggest what the fishing boat looked like in the time of Jesus!

The Location of Magdala

How to Get There?

Get on a bus from Tiberias. The ride was for 13 minutes. A single ride cost 5.6NIS. So it’s better to buy Rav Kav’s #740 Day pass for 21.5NIS. But this will take you as far as to Safed, which is a great place to go (more synagogues!) after visiting Magdala.

Once you get off from the bus, you have to cross the road… there’s no zebra crossing here….  When you are at the roundabout, turn right.

Follow Google Maps or signs. Turn right again at the second roundabout.

Keep walking. It takes 5-10 minutes to arrive at the entrance from the bus stop.

If you are driving, there’s a free parking lot at the entrance.
